That’s Called Entitlement

A 2000 Harvard Advocate interview with author/publisher Dave Eggers vs. a 2014 Impose magazine interview with internet personality Chris Ott.

Dave Eggers: What matters is not the perception, nor the fashion, not who’s up and who’s down, but what someone has done and if they meant it.

Chris Ott: They own that conduit and if I want access to it, they’re offering me a pretty fair trade.

Eggers: They switched record labels. So yes, they are for real.

Ott: You’re complicit in sustaining their authenticity to navigate millennials who are so mistrusting of corporate brands.

Eggers: What if I were buying property in St. Kitt’s or blew it all on live-in prostitutes?

Ott: I’m pretty sure you can get that from Starbucks.

Eggers: The thing is, I really like saying yes.

Ott: You’re opting in, and it’s an ad network. You’re involved.

Eggers: Please. We just don’t care. We don’t.

Ott: That’s called entitlement.

Eggers: Then everyone stayed until 2, most people were drunk, and lots of people hooked up with each other. You actually asked me the question: “Are you taking any steps to keep shit real?

Ott: That’s all I’m saying. That’s all that this is about.

Eggers: Someone with his or her own shit figured out, without any emotional problems or bitterness or envy, instead of killing that which he loves, will simply let the goddamn butterfly fly, and instead of capturing and killing it and sticking it in a box, will simply point to it – “Hey everyone, look at that beautiful thing” – hoping everyone else will see the beautiful thing he has seen.

Ott: How can you feel happy about that? Gimmie a fucking break.

Eggers: Which is further proof that criticism comes from a dark and dank place.
